For more than 150 years, Reid’s Orchard has been growing fruit for the Owensboro community, with six generations of the Reid family continuing a tradition that began in 1873.

The orchard traces its roots to Allan Reid, who immigrated from Scotland intending to work in Kentucky’s tobacco industry. Instead, he discovered a passion for growing fruit, laying the foundation for what would become one of the area’s longest-standing family farms.

Today, the orchard is operated by Billy and Kathy Reid, along with their children Valerie Reid, Brad Reid, and Katie Clark. The family’s grandchildren have also become involved, representing the sixth generation.

Over the years, Reid’s Orchard has expanded to include vegetables, flowers, seasonal attractions, and events, while continuing to grow the fruit that first established the family farm.

Katie Clark said Billy Reid’s dedication to growing fruit has helped shape the orchard into what it is today.

“Billy has put his heart and soul into learning everything he can about growing fruit trees and continually improving the way we grow our fruit,” Clark said. “His passion and dedication have played a huge role in helping our orchard grow and thrive into what it is today.”

At the Owensboro Regional Farmers Market, the orchard specializes in bringing fresh peaches to customers who can’t make the trip to the farm.

“We want everyone to have a chance to enjoy our peaches no matter where they shop,” Clark said.

Reid’s Orchard has been a part of the Owensboro Regional Farmers Market since it first opened.

“Being part of the market has always been important to us because it gives us a way to connect with our local community and bring our farm’s fresh produce directly to people,” Clark said.

The relationships built with fellow vendors and customers have become one of Clark’s favorite parts of the market.

“There’s such a great sense of community at the farmers’ market,” she said. “Everyone is there to support one another, lend a helping hand, and cheer each other on. Those relationships are truly what make being part of the market so special.”
