What began as a way to teach their children about self-sufficiency has turned into a full-fledged family farm operation for Lindsey and Brad Aud, owners of Cravo Farms in Whitesville.
The couple and their five children now operate both a roadside stand and a popular booth at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market, offering everything from fresh produce to homemade sourdough baked goods.
Cravo Farms was officially named in 2020, but Lindsey said they didn’t really “get on the map” until 2022. The name “Cravo” is a combination of the first letters of each of their five children’s names, a process Lindsey said took some creativity.
“Brad and I were teaching the kids how to grow their own food, how to take care of things around them,” she said. “We had all this produce because they were working in the garden, so we thought, ‘We’ll teach y’all how to make some money, too.’”
That idea led to the creation of the Cravo roadside stand, located at the corner of Herbert Road and Jake Russell Road in Whitesville.
After tossing around the idea for a while, the family decided earlier this year to take a leap and join the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market.
“I knew our produce wouldn’t be ready by the time the market opened in April, so I started making sourdough buns and sourdough cinnamon rolls to kind of build our customer base,” Lindsey said. “Now we’ve got a little bit of produce coming in, so we offer both baked goods and produce.”
Cravo Farms’ produce lineup includes tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, and more. Broccoli was available earlier in the season, and melons will be ready later this summer.
Lindsey said the experience has been educational for them in more ways than one, especially since the family began homeschooling last August.
“They’re learning to work with their hands, but also how to earn an income off of it. There’s science, there’s math — it all ties together,” she said. “I can’t say they love it every day, but they’re learning a lot.”
Lindsey added that the market has been an incredibly welcoming and supportive environment, particularly for young families.
“There are a bunch of awesome vendors down here, really kind people,” she said. “And I didn’t realize until this year that they actually had an activity center for kids. My kids love it — they do a different science experiment every Saturday, and they even have smaller activities on Tuesdays.”
The Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market is open Saturday and Tuesday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon and Thursday evenings from 4-7 p.m.
